The newly-released documentary on GSC Game World @ YouTube, War Game: The Making of Stalker 2, shares the journey of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 creators while they navigate the development of the game during war time.
It was eye-opening to see, generations after the Chernobyl disaster, how deeply marked and influenced the people are, especially the developers working on the game. As someone from a neighboring country who has learned about and become fascinated with the subject, I still feel a sense of distance. From time to time, a movie, series, or book reminds me of the event, but it is nothing compared to living somewhere where the atomic disaster is a real part of life, with an exclusion zone.
I bet the new game will feel even more immersive, but the older games still serve as a testament to this fascinating event. Some might argue that the series is based on Roadside Picnic, and while it is indeed inspired by that, the larger influence comes from the real events that took place. This doesn’t downgrade the book by any means, it is a great book that is somewhat of a fast read.
And of course, there were many efforts for relocating and dealing with colleagues who joined the armed forces. I have to say, this project is really something else entirely. We are taking too many things for granted.
Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is set to launch on 20th November.

Just by browsing some comments on the video, there are comments highlighting personal connections to the Stalker series, including memories of childhood gaming and how the franchise provided an escape during tough times.
And while it wasn’t my childhood game, I managed to experience it properly in 2012. What an experience! If anyone is waiting for STALKER 2 and hasn’t played the first ones, do yourself a favor and make use of this imgur guide or pastebin guide and start playing!
