Nintendo of America Confirms Layoffs as Part of Testing Division Shake-Up

As the wave of layoffs continues throughout 2024 without hints of slowing down across all tech sectors, gaming sector is starting to be shaken up as well.

In a strategic move that has caught the attention of the gaming community, Nintendo of America is reshaping its workforce in Washington.

As Kotaku first reported, this decision aligns with the broader anticipation surrounding the rumored launch of Nintendo’s Switch successor. This leads to layoffs among contracted game testers while also converting a select group into full-time employees.

What can i say, the spokesmen do have their way with the words. Let’s see what Nintendo had to say:

Nintendo of America (NOA) has reorganized its Product Testing functions to drive greater global integration in game development efforts. The changes will also better align NOA with interregional testing procedures and operations.

Interesting choice of words, and while everyone can agree that they actually mean it, in my mind I can only read:

Nintendo of America (NOA) has decided to lay off 100 testers, because after launching “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” we feel like it’s easier to do this instead of for example, assigning them to other projects, and when we will prepare the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, we will post and ad and recruit.

It may be completely false, but wouldn’t be interesting if people would communicate honestly, for a change?
