Ubisoft Brings Day-One Releases Back to Steam Starting February
A necessary comeback after years of Epic Games Store exclusivity

Ubisoft has recently announced that all its new games will launch on Steam starting next February.

This shift will begin with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows on February 14th, which was delayed from the initial date of November 15, 2024. This marks the first day-one Steam release from Ubisoft since Starlink: Battle for Atlas in 2019.

Over the last few years, Ubisoft had focused on its own store and the Epic Games Store, leaving Steam out of initial releases.

The news comes during a challenging time for Ubisoft, following a year of disappointing financial results, job cuts, and delays. Arguably, Ubisoft’s financial strategy has contributed to the drop in its share price by over 50% in the last year.

Opinion

It seems like Gabe Newell keeps on winning. There was a time when PC gaming hit rock bottom, with the PS5 dominating the market, Xbox thriving, and consoles in general enjoying one of their strongest periods, fueled by exclusive after exclusive.

Also his bet on Steam, to steer Valve towards and a platform-first strategy has arguably turned out to be a winning move, “singlehandedly saving” PC gaming as a whole, for developers and gamers alike. Now is a great time to be a gamer overall, and it’s especially satisfying to see major platforms ‘crawling back,’ one by one.
