Sony Chooses AMD Over Intel for PlayStation 6 Chips, Costing Intel Billions

According to a recent Reuters report, Intel lost the PlayStation 6 chip contract to AMD, missing out on around $30 billion in revenue.

This was primarily due to financial disagreements, but it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room: AMD’s growing dominance in the gaming industry, particularly with their innovative custom APUs (Accelerated Processing Units), featured in devices like the ROG Ally. While NVIDIA still holds the crown and will likely continue to do so for a while, AMD has positioned itself as a solid second contender in both GPU and CPU markets, with innovations that challenge the leaders.

Intel, meanwhile, has faced technical challenges, most notably with their 13th and 14th Gen Core i9 processors, which have had issues related to voltage management. This combined with Intel’s slower transition to smaller nanometer manufacturing compared to AMD’s use of TSMC’s advanced nodes, have further dampened their ability to compete in the rapidly evolving gaming hardware market.
